Kurt Pianka
Kurt Pianka is a fourth year medical student at University of California San Diego School of Medicine with interests in liver-directed therapies and applications of machine learning to liver imaging. He studied biomedical engineering at Brown University and worked in biotech/biopharma strategy consulting before matriculating to UCSD. In the LIG, Kurt's projects focus on advanced dosimetry for transarterial radioembolization and radiation treatment response assessment for hepatocellular carcinoma. Outside of the lab, Kurt's interests include surfing, rock climbing, and hiking with his dog.

Cal Poly San Luis Obispo
Sophia Koehler
Sophia is a Sophomore at Cal Poly San Luis Obispo currently studying Physics. Growing up around medicine with veterinarian parents, she developed an interest in the medical field, and now hopes to join the radiology field due to her fascination with physics. She joined the lab in July of 2024, where she has measured liver fat content by analyzing novel corrected T1 images for a weight loss surgery study. She also manually analyzed spherical phantom data which will be used to calibrate and improve scans using QIBA metrics for a multi-site study. In her free time, Sophia enjoys mountain biking, the beach, baking, gymnastics, and spending time with all her pets!
